Roll processing technology
The processing process of rolling mill rolls mainly includes the following steps:
Material selection and preparation. The material of the roll is usually alloy steel, high-speed steel or heat-resistant
steel. The selection of these materials is based on the force that the roll needs to withstand and the type of material
to be rolled. Before manufacturing, the material needs to be heat treated to obtain the required properties.
Casting. Through the casting process, the selected material is formed into a billet, which is the initial formation of
the roll.
forging. After the billet is heated to a certain temperature, it is put into a forging press for forging to reduce the
internal defects of the billet. The forged rolls usually have extra processing allowance and require rough machining.
roughing. Preliminary shape processing is performed on the forged roll through turning, milling, etc., so that the roll
is close to the finished shape. After rough machining, the rolls need to be heat treated to relieve stress.
heat treatment. Heat treatment includes quenching and tempering. Quenching aims to rapidly cool the roll surface
to produce high hardness, while tempering reduces hardness and increases toughness through heating.
finishing. The precision and shape of the rolls are further improved through turning, milling, grinding and other
processes. The finished rolls need to undergo ultrasonic flaw detection for quality inspection.
Ultrasonic flaw detection. This step is used to detect whether there are cracks, pores, inclusions and other defects
inside the roll to ensure that the quality of the roll meets the standards.
Surface treatment. The final process link is designed to protect the roll surface and improve service life and wear
resistance. Surface treatment methods include chromium plating, nitriding, spraying, etc.
Through the above steps, high-quality rolling mill rolls can be produced that meet standards and requirements.
