The "Hydrogen Era" kicks off
As a clean, efficient, safe and sustainable secondary energy, hydrogen energy can be obtained through primary energy, secondary energy and industrial fields. Hydrogen energy will become an important medium for the third energy revolution. Hydrogen can be used in transportation, as a feedstock for petroleum refining, ammonia production, and in metal refining and heating and cooking in the residential sector. Furthermore, hydrogen has the potential to be an energy carrier that integrates different infrastructures to improve economic efficiency, reliability, flexibility, and many of these uses will help reduce carbon emissions from the power and transport sectors. Hydrogen can also provide large-scale long-term energy storage for the power sector. In addition, the hydrogen energy storage system can provide auxiliary grid services such as emergency response, load tracking and regulation reserves, which can provide additional energy sources and thus reduce the cost of hydrogen production equipment from water electrolysis. Hydrogen could also be another bridge between the VRE and the transportation sector.
